Grenada passport benefits and limitations

Advantages

  • Schengen, UK and China on one document. No other Caribbean CBI passport covers all three. For a traveller on an Indian, Nigerian or Vietnamese passport, that combination is the principal benefit.
  • E-2 treaty with the US. The only Caribbean CBI country with one. After genuine domicile in Grenada, commonly three years, a Grenadian can apply for a US E-2 investor visa.
  • Not subject to US Proclamation 10998. Grenada was not named in US Proclamation 10998, which restricted Antigua and Dominica nationals from US immigrant, B-1/B-2, F, M and J visas.
  • Inheritable. Children born after you naturalise are Grenadian by descent. It is a family asset, not a one-generation document.

Limitations and risks

  • No visa-free entry to the US or Canada. No visa waiver, no Canadian eTA. If your objective is easier entry to North America, this passport will not achieve it.
  • Schengen is not guaranteed after 2028. The EU's July 2026 letter asked Grenada to end CBI by 1 June 2028. The Visa Suspension Mechanism has already removed Vanuatu's access.
  • US immigrant-visa freeze. On 21 January 2026 the US paused immigrant-visa processing for 75 countries on public-charge grounds, Grenada among them. Non-immigrant visas, including E-2, are unaffected.
  • India does not allow dual citizenship. An Indian national who takes a Grenada passport ceases to be Indian and must surrender the Indian passport. We flag this on the first call.
  • Renewal means biometrics. ECCIRA requires biometric capture on renewal. Plan for it; the passport requires periodic renewal in person.

For US and Canadian citizens and for residents on other passports, the same document serves very different purposes.

How to get a Grenada passport: guidance for US and Canadian applicants

For US and Canadian citizens

You get a Grenadian passport by investment in about seven months, from US$235,000, without living there. It sits beside your own passport and adds China, a second nationality for your children and a contingency if your own passport ever becomes a constraint. It does not reduce US tax (FBAR and FATCA continue) or Canadian tax while you remain resident, and the E-2 treaty is irrelevant to you. Treat it as contingency planning, not a tax strategy.

For US and Canada residents on another passport

If you are Nigerian, Indian, Pakistani, Vietnamese or Chinese and living in Toronto or the US, a Grenadian passport replaces visa applications for Europe, the UK, China and most of Asia. It does not change your US or Canadian status and cannot be used to enter either country without a visa. If your nationality has no US treaty, it also opens the E-2 route after domicile in Grenada. Check nationality restrictions first; Iranian and Russian applicants face limits that depend on residence history.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries can I visit visa-free with a Grenada passport?

Around 144 destinations visa-free or visa-on-arrival on the 2026 Henley Passport Index; other indices put it between 140 and 154. That includes the Schengen Area, the UK, Ireland, China, Hong Kong and Singapore. It excludes the United States and Canada, which require visas. The number blends visa-free, visa-on-arrival and eTA access, so check the specific country before you travel.

Can I renew a Grenada passport from Canada or the US?

Renewal is handled through Grenada's passport authority; ECCIRA now requires biometric capture at every renewal, so expect to attend in person at a designated point rather than post a form. Our clients receive renewal reminders and we coordinate the appointment. Budget for the trip when you plan the 30-day presence requirement, since the two can be combined.

Is a Grenada passport stronger than St Kitts or Dominica?

St Kitts and Nevis has the broadest reach of the five, at around 150–167 destinations, and Dominica the narrowest at around 140–145 with no UK access. Grenada sits in the middle at around 144 but is the only one with visa-free China and a US E-2 treaty, and it is not in US Proclamation 10998, which Dominica is. Reach matters less than whether your specific destinations are covered.

How do I get a Grenadian passport?

By investment: a US$235,000 contribution to the National Transformation Fund or an approved real estate purchase from US$270,000 plus US$50,000, filed through a licensed agent, with due diligence, an interview and about seven months of processing. Other routes exist: seven years' residence, marriage to a Grenadian, or descent from a Grenadian parent. We handle the investment route end to end from Toronto.
