Grenada citizenship benefits and risks

What you gain

  • US E-2 treatyGrenada is the only Caribbean CBI country with a US E-2 treaty (since 1989). Valuable for nationals of India, China, Nigeria, Vietnam, Russia and other non-treaty countries who want to run a US business.
  • Visa-free China30 days visa-free, the only Caribbean CBI passport with it. Matters if you source, manufacture or have family in mainland China.
  • Not in US Proclamation 10998Antigua and Dominica nationals lost US immigrant, B-1/B-2, F, M and J visas from 1 January 2026. Grenada was not named.
  • Mid-range investment, seven-month average processingLower minimum investment than St Kitts; faster processing than Antigua, Dominica and St Lucia. Family of four for about US$257,000 all-in.

What could go wrong

  • EU phase-out letter, June 2028In July 2026 the European Commission asked all five islands to end CBI by 1 June 2028. Schengen access is intact today and not guaranteed after that date. Vanuatu lost it this way.
  • Contributions are non-refundableThe NTF contribution and the US$50,000 real estate contribution are non-refundable. Due diligence and application fees are not returned if you are refused.
  • 30-day rule from 2026Grenada announced 30 days' presence in the first five years, plus five days in the first 12 months for the principal, from April–June 2026. Applications filed before it took effect were grandfathered.
  • No US or Canada accessNo US visa waiver. Canada requires a visa for Grenadian nationals; there is no eTA route as there is for Antigua, St Kitts and St Lucia.
  • E-2 is slow and conditionalThe E-2 expects genuine domicile in Grenada (commonly three years), a substantial at-risk investment in a real US business you direct, and it is non-immigrant: no green card.
  • Nationality restrictionsAfghanistan, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Belarus, Sudan and Yemen are restricted or excluded, with narrow exceptions for long residence elsewhere. Ask us before filing.

Grenada passport by investment compared with a US or Canadian passport

A Grenadian passport is held alongside your existing one, not in place of it. Here is what changes for each applicant profile.

Your situationWhat Grenada addsWhat it does not change
US citizenSecond passport with Schengen, UK and China access; a contingency citizenship for the family; citizenship transmissible to childrenUS worldwide taxation, FBAR and FATCA reporting; no exit from the IRS without renouncing US citizenship

The US E-2 Treaty Investor visa and Grenada citizenship

Because it is the reason many clients choose Grenada CBI over St Kitts or Dominica, we set out the conditions in full. The E-2 Treaty Investor visa is a US non-immigrant visa for nationals of treaty countries who invest a substantial, at-risk sum in a real, operating US business they will direct. It is renewable for as long as the business runs; spouses can work; it never becomes a green card on its own. US consular practice and Grenada's own rule expect a Grenadian citizen by investment to have genuine domicile in Grenada, commonly described as three years' continuous residence, before filing. The treaty offers no advantage to Canadian or US citizens. It is highly relevant to a Nigerian or Indian founder in Toronto or Houston whose own nationality has no treaty. We set out the whole route, and who should not attempt it, on the Grenada E-2 visa page.

Who Grenada CBI suits: US and Canadian applicants

For US and Canadian citizens

Grenada citizenship is a second passport and contingency plan, not a tax strategy. If you are American, the IRS taxes you on worldwide income wherever you live, and a Grenadian bank account is reported under FATCA (Grenada has a Model 1 IGA). If you are Canadian, you keep paying Canadian tax until you sever residential ties; the passport alone changes nothing. What you acquire is a second travel document for you and your children, transmissible to the next generation, from a country with no citizenship-based taxation, plus the option of a tax-free base if you ever move there for 183+ days a year.

  • The E-2 treaty adds nothing for you: US citizens do not need it and Canada has its own E-2 treaty.
  • Visa-free China is the one destination a Grenadian passport covers that yours does not.
  • Grenada was not named in US Proclamation 10998, so the passport carries no US visa complication for your family.

For US and Canada residents on another passport

This is most of our client base: work permit, PR, study permit or H-1B holders from Nigeria, India, Vietnam, China, Pakistan and the Gulf. A Grenadian passport gives you Schengen, the UK, China, Singapore and Hong Kong without visa queues. It does not get you into the US or Canada more easily: there is no US visa waiver for Grenada, and Canada requires a visa for Grenadian nationals. What it can add, if your own nationality has no treaty, is eligibility for a US E-2 investor visa after you establish genuine domicile in Grenada.

  • Confirm your nationality is not restricted before you commit any funds; we can verify this in a single consultation.
  • India does not recognise dual citizenship: taking Grenadian citizenship ends Indian citizenship. Plan for that before you apply.
  • The E-2 route is viable but slow and requires an operating business: see our E-2 page before you count on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Grenada citizenship: your questions answered

How much does Grenada citizenship by investment cost for a family of four?

About US$257,000 all-in on the National Transformation Fund route: US$235,000 contribution, US$6,000 in application fees, US$10,000 due diligence for the two adults, US$4,000 processing and US$2,000 interview fees, assuming both children are under 17. Passport fees and our professional fees are extra. The real estate route costs from US$270,000 plus a US$50,000 government contribution and the same fees.

How long does Grenada citizenship take?

Seven months on average, with a range of four to nine months, according to the IMI processing-times data for Q4 2025. Add one to two months before filing to assemble police certificates, bank references and source-of-funds evidence. Quotes of 60 or 90 days are outdated; they have not been achievable since interviews and regional due diligence under ECCIRA became mandatory.

Does a Grenada passport let me enter the United States or Canada without a visa?

No. There is no US visa waiver for Grenada, and Canada requires a visitor visa for Grenadian nationals; the eTA route open to Antigua, St Kitts and St Lucia nationals does not apply. Grenada was not named in US Proclamation 10998, so ordinary US visa categories remain available. The passport's value is Schengen, the UK, China and Asia, plus the E-2 treaty.

Can I get a US E-2 visa with Grenada citizenship?

Grenadian citizens are eligible to apply, but two conditions matter. Grenada expects genuine domicile, commonly three years' residence, before you rely on the treaty, and the E-2 requires a substantial, at-risk investment in a real US business you will run. It is a non-immigrant visa, renewable while the business operates, and never a green card by itself. Canadian citizens gain nothing from it.

Do I have to live in Grenada?

Not today. Grenada announced a 30-day physical-presence requirement within the first five years of citizenship, plus five days in the first 12 months for the main applicant, taking effect between April and June 2026. Applications filed before it took effect were grandfathered. Expect to spend those 30 days over five years, and budget the travel.

Will the Schengen visa-free access survive?

It is intact today. The European Commission wrote to Grenada and the other four islands in July 2026 asking them to phase out CBI by 1 June 2028 and to tighten vetting by September 2026, with the next review in December 2026. Vanuatu lost Schengen access under the same mechanism. Treat Schengen as a real benefit now and an uncertain one after 2028.

Does Grenadian citizenship change my US or Canadian taxes?

No. The US taxes citizens on worldwide income wherever they live, and FBAR and FATCA reporting continue; Grenada has a Model 1 FATCA agreement, so a Grenadian bank account is reported to the IRS. Canada taxes by residency, so a Canadian keeps paying Canadian tax until residential ties are severed. Grenada's zero tax on foreign income applies only to its tax residents.
