Questions

Does Grenada citizenship change your US or Canadian tax position?

Short answer

No. Grenadian citizenship alone does not change your US or Canadian taxes. The US taxes citizens on worldwide income wherever they live, and FBAR and FATCA reporting continue. Canada taxes by residency, so a Canadian keeps paying Canadian tax until residential ties are severed. Grenada's zero tax on foreign income applies only to its tax residents.

Key points

  • The US taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live.
  • Grenada has a Model 1 FATCA agreement, so Grenadian bank accounts are reported to the IRS.
  • Canada taxes by residency until residential ties are severed.
  • Grenada's zero tax on foreign income applies only to people who are tax resident there.

US citizens: worldwide taxation continues

The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live. Acquiring Grenadian citizenship does not alter that, and FBAR and FATCA reporting continue. Grenada has a Model 1 FATCA agreement, so an account at a Grenadian bank is reported to the IRS.

Canadian residents: tax follows residency

Canada taxes by residency, not by citizenship. A Canadian who adds a Grenadian passport keeps paying Canadian tax until residential ties are severed. Holding the passport without moving changes nothing on a Canadian return.

Grenada's tax treatment of its residents

Grenada's zero tax on foreign income applies only to its tax residents. Citizenship gives you the right to live there; it does not make you resident. The points to check before you rely on any tax benefit are:

  • where you will actually live after citizenship is granted;
  • whether you remain a US citizen or a Canadian tax resident;
  • which accounts are reportable under FATCA.

Both the US and Canada permit dual citizenship, and Grenada requires no renunciation, so the passport is a mobility and contingency asset first: Schengen, the UK, China, Hong Kong and Singapore, around 144 destinations in total. The contribution starts at US$235,000 and is non-refundable. Can you get a US E-2 visa through Grenada citizenship by investment?

Grenadian citizens are eligible to apply for a US E-2 Treaty Investor visa, but two conditions matter. Grenada expects genuine domicile, commonly three years' residence, before you rely on the treaty, and the E-2 requires a substantial, at-risk investment in a real US business you will run. It is never a green card by itself.

Do you have to live in Antigua and Barbuda to keep your citizenship?

No. Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment does not require you to live on the islands. You must spend 30 days in the country within the first five years of citizenship under the 2026 amendment, which replaced the old five-day rule. Applications approved before the rule took effect keep the five-day requirement.

Can you travel to the US or Canada on an Antigua and Barbuda passport?

Not visa-free. The US requires a visa, and since 1 January 2026 Proclamation 10998 suspends immigrant, B-1/B-2, F, M and J visas for Antiguan nationals. Canada grants an eTA only to Antiguan nationals who held a Canadian visa in the last ten years or hold a valid US visa, and only when arriving by air.

Will the St Kitts and Nevis passport keep visa-free access to Schengen?

Schengen access is intact today. In July 2026 the European Commission asked all five Caribbean governments to phase out citizenship by investment by 1 June 2028, and the Visa Suspension Mechanism now treats operating a programme as grounds for suspension. We advise that visa-free Schengen access is current and not guaranteed after 2028.
