The Dominican citizenship requirements are few and rigorously verified: a main applicant aged 18 or over, no criminal record, a documented source of funds, a US$200,000 minimum, and an interview for everyone aged 16 or over. Dominican citizenship requirements for US and Canadian applicants
For US and Canadian citizens
You meet the nationality criteria; the main work is documenting source of funds. US applicants need tax returns that match bank statements, and any Dominican account is reported under FATCA. Canadians file with Notices of Assessment. Neither country objects to dual citizenship, and your own passport is untouched by Proclamation 10998 or the UK change.
For US and Canada residents on another passport
Nationality is the first check. Nigerian, Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese and Pakistani nationals qualify, sometimes with an enhanced due diligence surcharge. Iranian, Russian, Belarusian, Afghan, Sudanese and Yemeni nationals are restricted, with limited exceptions for ten or more years' residence abroad; send us your residence history and we will say which islands are open. Police certificates are needed from home and from the US or Canada.
Dominica restricted nationalities and grounds for refusal
Restricted nationalities. Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Belarus, Sudan and Yemen are excluded or restricted, with limited exceptions for ten or more years' residence outside those countries. The list changes; ask us before planning around it.
Why files are refused. Undisclosed visa refusals or a prior refusal by another Caribbean unit, now visible through ECCIRA. Source-of-funds gaps, especially cash-heavy businesses. Names spelled differently across passport, birth certificate and bank records. Undisclosed criminal matters, however minor. Interview answers that contradict the file. Sanctions or adverse media hits, now screened against EU lists too.
After the grant. Citizenship can be revoked for fraud; Dominica has revoked 68 passports since June 2024. Expect 30 days' presence within the first five years, and in-person passport collection and renewal on the island once the drafted law passes.
Request a Dominica eligibility assessment before paying any fees
A short eligibility check tells you whether Dominica is open to your nationality and whether your source-of-funds documentation meets CBIU standards. There is no charge if we advise against applying. Book a consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Who can be included in a Dominica citizenship application?
The main applicant, spouse, unmarried financially dependent children under 31, and parents or grandparents aged 65 or over who depend on the applicant. Up to three dependants are covered by the US$250,000 contribution; each further dependant adds US$25,000 (under 18) or US$40,000 (18 and over). Dependants can also be added after citizenship is granted.
Do I need to visit Dominica or speak English?
No language test and no residence requirement today. The interview is mandatory for everyone aged 16 or over. ECCIRA's 30-day presence rule within the first five years is expected, and in-person passport collection and renewal in Dominica is being legislated, so plan for at least one trip.
Which nationalities cannot apply for Dominican citizenship?
Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Belarus, Sudan and Yemen are restricted or excluded, with limited exceptions for nationals who have lived outside those countries for ten or more years. Other nationalities may face an enhanced due diligence surcharge. Because the rule turns on residence history, send us yours and we will confirm which islands are open to you.
What are the main reasons a Dominica application is refused?
Undisclosed visa refusals or a prior refusal by another Caribbean unit, source-of-funds gaps, inconsistent civil documents, undisclosed criminal matters however minor, sanctions or adverse media hits, and interview answers that contradict the file. Fees paid on submission are not refunded and a refusal is shared across the region, so we vet the file fully before filing.
